Guillaume Chassot Peugniez – Spectrum Web 26 Octobre 2016

A few words first

I’m not your boss so those are advices, not rules.

Please use this as a template on which you can build your own workplace.

Don’t forget that I’m still available for help at those adresses :

guillaume.peugniez@unifr.ch   guillaumepeugniez@gmail.com   @neufel on twitter   or Guillaume Chassot on Facebook

 You’ll have two jobs

Editor

 I. Content  II. Publishing

Webmaster

III. Take Care of the site  IV. Social Media

V. Coming up with new ideas !

Editor in web : Content Rule 1 : If you want people to write on your website,

you need to motivate them. Like, a lot.

Editing on the website is a bit of planning.

Far less than the editor in chief, but a bit.  You need to, at the same time :

Create a timeline as to when you will publish articles  Prepare ideas in the eventuality where no one brings

ideas  Give rules and help to the redactors  Correct, and sometimes refuse articles  Post the articles on the site… while you’re already

preparing the articles for the next month !

The timeline of content creation (and curation)

Check what has been done at the same time a few years back.

Some projects could still be going on.   Links :

  http://agenda.unifr.ch/public/   http://www.fribourgregion.ch/fr/event-calendar.html   https://www.tempslibre.ch/fribourg   Etc.

Articles linked to the dossier : always a good idea ! The article becomes advertisement for the magazine and vice-versa

Photo-reportages   Festivals   Long interviews   Gifsets à la Buzzfeed

Sources of inspiration

If you don’t want to write all the articles by yourself (and

you shouldn’t), you need to give cool projects « clé en main ».

As the work for the website is NOT paid, and far less visible than the magazine, you need to be persuasive J

That’s where I’m telling you to be present at the redaction meetings. If you’re not here, no one will want to work for you, and no one will be able to defend your article ideas beside yourself !

Selling your ideas to the crowd

Write down who’s writing what, and send them the

assignment again by mail (I’ve seen redactors ask me « wait, what am I supposed to write again ?), and with that e-mail, maybe send them a few rules and the template file .doc.

The rules files is on the moodle, feel free to update it !  The template file is also on the moodle, it helps gaining

some time for publishing if everyone writes the same way.  Tell people that they should bring their own pictures and

multimedia files (youtube link for ex.). That is THEIR job, and it is time consuming if you have to search for yourself.

Giving orders

It helps if the writers already know the rules. You can

then explain that based on X rule, this can’t be on the site.

But yet, that’s probably the worst part of the job (except if you like to destroy someone’s dreams). Because some writers have dreams (whether it be social dreams of revolution, or dreams of becoming a poet), and yet it is not the place for Spectrum to give away our spotlight for someone else’s dream. If someone wants to write poetry they can, but not when they’re supposed to write about something else.

Corrections and refusals

Editor in web : Publishing

 First steps

 Log-in  Create a new post for a

new article.  There are two ways of

writing : visual or text.  Visual means you will see

how the article will look directly, while text means you will see the balise codes (if you don’t know what that is, stay away if you can !)

Add a category  Add tags (I usually tag

the author name + event of the article)

You need to add a « featured image » to publish.

Please add pictures that are in the landscape format ! Or this will create a godzilla-sized picture in your article

  Let’s give you an exemple…

Writing in Wordpress

Every kind of article has its rules.  Here is a template you can use :

Layout

 Add QR codes !

No one uses QR codes on their smartphones.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use them.

When people see a QR code, they KNOW you have a website, and may check it later !

QR codes is visible publicity for your website, and that’s okay by me

You can create them via Shortcodes Ultimates (easy)

Or via a dedicated website (beautiful with the spectrum logo).

There are multiple websites, I use this one :

 https://www.unitag.io/fr/qrcode

 QR codes : how to

Create a draft with your article. You only need a title for the article.

Copy the permalink. This will be the article address when you publish it, no matter what (if you don’t change it)

 Then go to the site

Paste the address  Add the spectrum logo, change colors and stuff

Then download the code, and first CHECK IT WITH YOUR PHONE !

and give it to the editor in chief / layouter, who will use it !

  Multimedia :

This is THE INTERNETS. Let’s be honest, do you think the other students will go to our website to read columns and columns of text ?

The more multimedia content (video, pictures, but also files, links etc). For each kind of link, there is a cool plugin associated to it !

Plug-ins : A few are installed. Every one has a specific use. Let’s see them in detail

Time to be creative

 Contact Form 7

Create a form, some people don’t like to write e-mails, but will gladly fill up a form !

  Usage :   Jobs   Concours

Create the forms you need (name, email, questions etc)

Then copy the code on your page

  Ex: [contact-form-7 id="3290" title="Spectrum Dinner"]

 Content Cards

Links are annoying.  cool blue text, bro, but I

ain’t clicking on it.

But this ? This is classy.

Just click on the content card icon when publishing your article, and paste the address.

 Requirements Checklist

THE BEST  It will help you not

forget what you’re supposed to do.

You can create a list of what should be done to an article before it can be posted.

Now : you can’t post without adding a picture. You can add requirements

 Shortcodes Ultimate

This is the OTHER BEST.  All kinds of little codes that

will help beautify your articles.  What it can do :

Youtube videos, pdf file viewer, create tables, clickable buttons, text box, create simple QR codes, Menus, quotes, spoilers, picture galleries and even list of articles !

Try some in hidden pages ! It’s always fun to have something dynamic in an article

 Yoast SEO

This is what we’ve used to help get referenced on Google. Our referencement is still sub-par because :

1.  We don’t use Yoast very well 2.  We’re still a part of another

website   Feel free to try stuff and check

the documentation. DO NOT DELETE, or you will lose the admin rights on google webmaster tools ! And that would be bad.

What is the best timing ? You shouldn’t post all your

monthly articles in one day, people won’t read all of them… and they will lose interest in the next 4 weeks !

But you can publish an article every now and then without working every day !

You can   Save as draft and publish later  Choose a date for a   publication on another date !

Publication

ALWAYS click « preview » before publishing an

article. You never know when wordpress will fuck up your work. It’s easier to correct before the article is up than after. Also less stressful. Achtung : some plugins may not work in preview but work when published !

ALWAYS check the article after publishing it. Because wordpress can also fuck up after doing a good preview.

Try to publicize your article on social media at hours when people are present. 11am – 8pm, I’d say. But you can check the stats if that’s BS.

A few advices :

King of the Hill : taking care of the website

First, make a great password. Now you have the

responsibility of the whole magazine on your shoulders. So… yeah. No pressure.

The website has many problems because every year or so, the web editor leaves, and is replaced. I have no trace of what has been done and why prior to 2015 (yeah, one year ago).

There is a lot of stuff that’s broken, some that you can’t repair, and some that may be changed in the next few months.

The website, then, now and tomorrow

One of your jobs that is hard to track are the

« pages » : About the team, Jobs, etc.  Those need to change regularly but there is, as this

date, no real rules as to how and who should tell you what to change and when.

So that’s something you should look forward to.

Specific content

Update problems : check with micromus directly

What I planned and never had time to do :  Change the categories. There are too many, and they

don’t mean anything. You should work together to delete the old ones and create new and better ones ! This will be helpful for the homepage

Alma&Georges (the unifr online magazine) wants to work on a common project with us. Get in touch with them ! http://www.unifr.ch/alma-georges

Other

 Social Media

Facebook : Where you will be most of the time, and where we get

the most clicks. EVERY post is publicized on Facebook, and we usually try to post a few other posts during the month (build up to the new magazine etc)

Twitter : Where you will be visible to state actors. Fribourg Region and @unifr follow us there, and if we post at the right time, with the right content and the right hashtags, we get a free RT, and thus many news readers.

Google+ : the wordpress posts automatically there. It’s useless… but it helps for page ranking. We hope.

LinkedIn : Empty stuff for now. Would be cool to post jobs and such there, and link people that work or worked on the Spectrum via the LinkedIn.

Instagram : We have a few followers already, but this require time… and presence in the Uni ! I have delegated this task.

Vimeo : we have very few videos on here. You should check them out J

What do we have now

This is something Spectrum never had and

desperatly need. You two should talk.  Decide what you would like to see on social media,

and create it.  If the accounts are all FR or all DE, that’s bad.

Be creative and feel free to add content as you see fit

A joint direction

IFTTT : This is used with instagram. Everytime a picture

is posted on the spectrum instagram, it gets reposted automatically on facebook + twitter. This works well and saves some time

Wordpress publicize : posts automatically to twitter and google +. I usually post only on google+ and then write a handmade message on twitter later (always better so you can add @s and #s)

Specific tools

 You’re the boss, too

  Importance of being present :

helps build motivation with the redactors  Helps build relationship with the comity !  The projects won’t stand on your shoulders alone

This is why I’m leaving !

You’re web, but you shouldn’t be virtual

There is something you don’t know how to do ?

You won’t learn if you don’t have to !

The perfect time to try and learn new skills

If you don’t give ideas, if you don’t take responsibilities to

make those ideas come true, the journal will die.

My one advice is : look at what I’ve done. And find every thing that you find shitty. Make it better.   PS : don’t tell me what you found shitty. I have a heart.

You’re working with people that are able to use multimedia tools, writing tools, etc. Bring them to your projects, they will give you advices on how to make everything efficient.

Responsibilities

 Need a hand ?

You can still send me a DM or a mail, I’ll always be glad to help if I can.

Try to do this too when you leave Spectrum : the easier the transition,

the less work the new editor will have starting from scratch !
