• Every Greek polis is run by its CITIZENS!• Mesopotamia and Egyptians have SUBJECTS!

Subject

Using page 122 -123 in your textbook list the rights and responsibilities of a subject and of a citizen!

Subject of Mesopotamia & Egypt

• No rights they must listen to priests and kings• No say in government• They must obey all laws• They may not defend themselves in court

(Think about Hammurabi’s Code)

Citizens of Greece – Who was a citizen?

• Greeks were the first to have citizens• They were members of a political community

and treated each other as equals• Does this mean that everyone in the

community was equal?? • NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!

Only free native born men who owned land were citizens

• What about women and children??• Women and children could be citizens but

had no rights

Citizens of Greece – Who was a citizen?

• What about slaves & people not born in your polis?

• They were not allowed to be citizens• What if you didn’t own land?• Some polis’ did away with this rule of owning

land, as long as you were a free native born male you could be a citizen!

• Choose/Suggest laws• Pass laws• Right to vote• Hold office• Own property• Defend themselves in court

Citizens of Greece - Responsibilities

• In return for their citizenship status all citizens MUST:

• Serve in the government• Fight for their polis
