What is radical 部首 (bù shǒu) ？部首 (bù shǒu) •Is part of a character•Tell you the category of meanings the character belongs

E.g. 猪，狗，猫，狮，狼河，湖，海，洋，池，游泳她，妈，妹，姐，奶你，他，们，位

犭 = animal氵 = water

女 = female亻 = 人 = person

• Radical can be anywhere in a character.

•We often see radicals on the left side.

部首在哪里 (where) ？bù shǒu zài nǎ lǐ

亻 rénMeaning: Ex:(standing) person 你 , 什 ,他

人字旁：rén zì páng

女 nǚMeaning: Ex:

female 好 , 她

女字旁：nǚ zì páng

口 kǒuMeaning: Example:

mouth 叫 , 名

口字旁：kǒu zì páng

• There are also some radicals on the right side of the characters

• Radicals can also be located at the top or bottom of the character.
