IN THIS ISSUE
When September comes around, I can’t help but
think about two significant dates. One is significant in the history of Jodo Shinshu & the Buddhist Churches of America – we recognize September 1, 1899 as the founding of our organization here in the mainland United States. Japanese who had emigrated to the US felt that their community needed spiritual guidance and requested said guidance from Japan – Nishi Hongwanji responded and sent ministers – 115 years later, through ups and downs, and the organization still exists, making the teachings of Shinran Shonin available in this country.
The other date that sticks out for me is September 1, 1996 – this is the day I arrived in California to pursue my aspiration to become a Buddhist minister. I had spent a couple of years studying on my own, and fortunately discovered that a school existed where not only could I study Buddhism, but I could do it as a practitioner as well as academically. This school was the Institute of Buddhist Studies (in one of its previous loca-tions, Addison Street in Berkeley). Now, 18 years later, I am both a
minister and a teacher at my alma mater!
We can recognize both of these dates as beginnings. It is interest-ing that they both happened in September, since it traditionally marks the beginning of the school year in our country (for an alterna-tive example, we can look at Japan which starts school in April, follow-ing the German model). As anxiety-provoking as it can be to have to go back to school (or maybe that’s just me?), it is also an opportunity to begin anew. What thoughts went through the minds of the ministers who crossed the Pacific Ocean to start a new religious organization? What lies in the future for the BCA?
My thoughts are jumbled, and yet I also feel again some of the excitement and potential that was brimming within me when I flew across the country to begin my studies. As we begin the Dharma School year let us remember to look ahead with a positive attitude, maybe even realizing that each day, each moment, is the potential start to something new, a step forward on the path.

The following was dis-cussed at the July 6 OBWA
meeting. •DonationfromDoris Okano for Alex’s high school gradua-tion gratefully acknowledged.•Thankyouto Lou Minamo-to for conducting apron mak-ing workshop.•Thank you to ladies whomade apron and casserole car-rier kits and everyone who sewed the aprons and casse-role carriers.•Completion of cookbookprojected by year’s end.•FBWAConferenceinIrvine,California, in October. Patti Hisaoka and Kathy Terusaki will represent Oakland. Four Hoppo/Fukuoka ladies will visit the Bay Area October 13-16.•Visitation scheduled for October.•Ideasforworkshops/events.•Discussion of changingtime and location of OBWA meetings.
Boy, it seems like I just finished writing my message and here it
is time to write another (much to Joyce Yokomizo’s and Pam Kato’s chagrin, I am three days late in submitting this). It has been slow this past month…not many activi-ties at church and no travel for me. We did have our picnic which was a success, even the weather even-tually cooperated. Thanks again to Ron Nomura for chairing the event, Gayle Inada for co-chair-ing, the Jr. YBA for organizing and leading the games, and all of you who helped with the cooking, set up, and cleanup and those who brought cookies.
Reverend Bridge, Mary Hi-romoto, Michael Endo, Carol Thunen/Patti Hisaoka and I have attended a number of So-dan or Funeral meetings this past month and actually this year. I never re-ally thought about them much but upon reflection, I find that I am glad to be able to do this. The families are so grateful for our help, especially at such a difficult time. I don’t know if other religions do this or even if other Buddhist sects do this. However, it is part of a BCA church’s tradition which is
another reason why I appreciate our practice. Participating in these meetings is probably one of the most rewarding responsibilities for me as President.
Welcome back Mika! It’s good to have you back. Karla Lee and I helped Mrs. Fujimoto with the altar flowers while Mika was away and I have to admit, I was a poor substitute. However, Mrs. Fujimoto was very kind and patient. One week, Karla Lee and I were asked to choose and purchase the flowers by ourselves. As directed, we got three types of flowers; well, one of the types of flowers we chose was very “weak” and Mrs. Fujimoto was not able to use them. She was so kind; she told me that she was unable to use the flowers but she also kept saying what a great job Karla and I did. Thanks for the en-couragement, Mrs. Fujimoto!
By the time you read this, Obon will have taken place. I hope all of you enjoyed yourselves. School will be starting soon as well as Sunday School. Have a great school year!

The Bay District Ministers Asso-ciation is pleased to announce
a seminar to be held on Satur-day, November 8, 2014, entitled “History, Liturgy, Teachings: Shinran Shonin’s Shoshinge.”
Shinran Shonin’s “Shoshinge” is the heart of our Jodo Shin-
shu school. It is both a concise encapsulation of Shinran Shonin’s doctrinal understanding, as well as a deep spiritual expression of the nembutsu for Shin followers through the liturgy and rituals of the Jodo Shinshu tradition.
Please join the Bay District Min-isters at this daylong seminar, where we will examine the historical back-ground, doctrinal meaning, and liturgical practice of the “Shoshinge.”
Please see application form or visit http://www.dharmalantern.net/shoshinge to register online.
