RECONOCE A JESÚS
El actor estelar del Evangelio de
hoy es un mendigo. Bartimeo es ciego,
si, pero es probable que también fuera
alguien sin hogar y estuviera sucio,
una verdadera molestia para los
ciudadanos respetables.
mismo?

RECOGNIZING JESUS
The star of today’s Gospel is a
panhandler. Bartimaeus is blind, yes,
but he is probably also homeless and
filthy, a real nuisance to respectable
citizens. Even so, it is Bartimaeus
who recognizes Jesus as the Messiah,
places all his faith in him, throws
aside everything he has (his cloak),
begs him for mercy, receives new
vision, and follows Jesus on the way
to suffering and death in
Jerusalem. How desperate
will we have to get before
we can do the same.

News from the Padre/ Noticias de Nuestro Sacerdote
When did devotion to Mary begin? There is a wealth of information on devotion to the Blessed
Virgin in the Dictionary of Mary and in the New Catholic Encyclopedia. Both locate the roots of devotion to
Mary in the Scriptures themselves and the accounts of the Nativity, the wedding at Cana, and the Passion
narratives. According to the Dictionary of Mary, excavations at the site of the Basilica of the Annunciation in
Nazareth brought to the surface some thirty inscriptions and graffiti in Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, and
Armenian that give “sure proof that the Jewish Christians of Palestine believed in the divinity of Christ before the
Council of Nicaea and practiced devotion to the martyrs and to Mary as early as the third century. The same source
speaks of inscriptions and graffiti under Saint Peter’s Basilica going back to the second or third century and
portraying Mary as a protector for the faithful departed and their mediatrix with Christ. In the catacombs of Saint
Priscilla, there are frescoes with that same theme. Second-century baptismal creeds mention Mary as the mother of
Jesus; he was “born of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary.” A Eucharistic prayer from the same century mentions
her as well. Saint Athanasius, who died in 373, proposed Mary as an example to dedicated virgins. At about the
same time Saint Ambrose devoted a series of writings to Mary as a model of virgins. The bishops of the United
States in their pastoral letter of 1973, Behold Your Mother, say that devotion to Mary began to grow wondrously
with the Council of Ephesus. At this council in 431 the church affirmed its belief and doctrine that Mary is the
mother of God. In the years after, Pope Sixtus III rebuilt the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome to commemorate
this declaration.
The earliest or original form of the prayer “We fly to thy patronage, O Holy
Mother of God” may come from the Ephesus period. Certainly from the fifth century,
liturgical feasts of Mary were celebrated. The first seems to have been a remembrance
of Mary “as part of the Christmas season.” Later came feasts of the Annunciation,
Dormition, and others. (This article was contributed by our visiting priest, Fr. Bob Daigle)
¿Cuándo devoción a María comenzar?
We have an active parishioner family, the Tatango’s, who has been afflicted with a serious family
medical situation. If you have bought homemade tamales here at church, they were most likely
made by the Tatango’s for a church-related fund raising effort. We now ask for spiritual and
monetary support for Saul, a 21-year-old hard-working and generous young man, who has been
diagnosed with testicular cancer, metastasized, with a tumor removed, and on a recurring
aggressive chemotherapy treatment for 6 months at least. Unfortunately, Saul is not strong enough
to continue working. After mass the Tatango’s are selling handmade Rosaries and paintings, or
will gratefully accept tax deductible cash or check contributions to an Incline Village Wells Fargo
designated charitable bank account. (Please see the office staff for this information.) The purchases and contributions will help
with out-of-pocket medical and living expenses during Saul’s fight for life. With your help, prayers, and God’s blessing, we
pray that Saul will again be a healthy, vibrant, and active parishioner. Thank you for your generosity and God bless.

November, in the Catholic church, is the month in which we celebrate and honor our saints and angels. Beginning
with next weekend’s Masses, we will chant the “Litany of Saints” throughout the month. In addition to invoking the
“standard” community of saints, part of the Litany’s weekly evolution is to include names of saints who help us to
remember our beloved deceased family members and friends who have gone before us. In keeping with this beautiful
and sacred November tradition, we ask all who wish to participate to please take a card from one of our ushers after
Mass today, and return it to an usher or our office during the next couple of weeks. If you prefer, you may also
simply place your remembrance card on the altar before any November Mass you attend, knowing that your
remembrance is offered in silent prayer during the Mass. We will endeavor to include as many saint names as
possible in either the prayer book or the Chant Litany.
Please note: If you are attending one of the All Saints Masses (Oct. 31st at 5:30 pm or Nov. 1st at 9 am) and wish to
include your remembrance card in that Mass, please place your card on the altar before Mass begins.
